Book Title: Dead in a Ditch: Living in Texas and other Near-Death Experiences
Co-Author Names: (none)
Number of pages: 262
Book Size: 6×9 inches
Brief Description of the Book: I come from a large family. My Mother’s biggest fear was that one or all of us would die on her watch when we were babies and then children. As we grew up, her fear shifted a little – not just that we would die, but that we would be found Dead In A Ditch. It was the ditch part that always made it seem so much worse, something drug or alcohol related, to be sure. Mother’s children crumpled up and tossed out the window like an old beer can. “Where have you been?” she would say, “I was worried sick. I thought you were dead in a ditch.” This was Mother’s mantra.

“So, how was it you got to do a TV show – you pull a gun on somebody?” – Geneice Gray, Dallas, Texas

    Hi Jody!

How the years fly by. Hope you’ve been well.
I’ve written my second book, Almost a Life. It’s newly available on amazon.com.
This story is about sexual trafficking in the early 1930s when times were tough and one way to make money was to force a woman into prostitution.
Decades later a grand niece is making huge social mistakes trying to find love and meaning in a 1960s California suburb.
The great aunt and her grand niece spend a summer together on the old family farm in Minnesota where their lives change, a man from the past appears, family secrets are uncovered, and a future for both women is created.
I would love to talk to you about my latest novel.
Hope you’re enjoying our sunshine (I am a rain-lover, but a few days of sun are glorious).

Thank you for your consideration, Jody.

    Dear Jody,

I hope you are well. It’s been several years since we met. As a refresher, I was a guest on your show when my first book came out, “Kill Me First: The Dangerous Side of Alzheimer’s.” I have written my second book, fiction this time. “Almost a Life” is available on amazon.com. It was edited by the talented people at Meadowlark Publishing Services.
It’s about a story I heard several times when I was a child. It’s a haunting story of a young farm woman during the Great Depression who falls for a good-looking guy from Chicago. Unknown to her, he owes a lot of money to a gangster. On the young woman’s wedding night the gangster forces her into speakeasy prostitution as a way to pay off the debt.
Years later her young grand niece is caught making out with three guys in the back seat of a ’54 Ford. She is immediately cast out of her peer group and her parents’ house.
The great aunt and the grand niece spend a summer together. It’s supposed to be punishment so the young girl will learn what happens to fallen women in the family. Instead, the girl and her elder relative have three months together that is life-changing.
I would love to talk with you about this story and its timeliness in today’s world of rape culture, slut shaming, and how it’s past time for a public conversation about rape and its aftermath.

Thank you Jody for your consideration. Hope you are well and enjoying our wondrous spring.

    Best wishes,

    Karen
